If identity verification does not pass

It happens more often than you would think, and it usually has a simple fix. Here is what it means and what to do.

What happened

Before the notary can proceed, they must be able to confirm your identity. If verification does not pass, it does not mean anything is wrong with you. It usually means a detail did not line up, such as a blurry ID image, an expired ID, or information that did not match. This is a normal safeguard, and there are clear steps to try next.

Common reasons

  • The ID photo was blurry, glared, or cut off
  • The ID is expired or damaged
  • The name or details entered did not match the ID
  • Lighting was too dim for the camera to read the ID clearly
  • An identifying detail was mistyped

What to do next

Recheck your details

Make sure the name and information you entered exactly match your ID, with no typos.

Use a clear, current ID

Choose a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID. Wipe the camera lens and hold the ID steady in good light so it is easy to read.

Improve lighting and framing

Face a light source, avoid glare, and fit the whole ID in the frame. A plain background helps.

Try again carefully

Repeat the verification step, taking your time with each part.
