ITIN and Form W-7 services

Apply for your ITIN with a Certifying Acceptance Agent

BKS reviews your original documents with you in a live interview, prepares your Form W-7, and mails your application to the IRS. In most cases you keep your originals instead of sending them away for weeks.

The IRS issues ITINs, not BKS. We cannot promise an outcome or a timeline.

What an ITIN is

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a nine-digit number the IRS issues to people who must have a U.S. taxpayer number but are not eligible for a Social Security Number.

Who generally needs one

Nonresident and resident aliens who must file a U.S. federal tax return, and their spouses and dependents when they are claimed for an allowable tax benefit. Some people need one for other tax reasons, such as certain income or a mortgage.

What it is for

Federal tax reporting only. An ITIN does not change immigration status, does not authorize work in the United States, and is not a Social Security Number.

Who issues it

Only the IRS. We help you prepare and submit a complete application. The IRS decides whether to issue an ITIN.

What BKS does as a Certifying Acceptance Agent

A Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) works under an agreement with the IRS to verify identity documents in person or by video and to submit Form W-7 for applicants.

We do

  • Check that you have what the IRS asks for before you pay for anything else
  • Review your original documents in a required live interview
  • Prepare your Form W-7 and the Certificate of Accuracy
  • Mail your complete application to the IRS and track it
  • Help you respond if the IRS writes back

We cannot

  • Issue an ITIN or guarantee one will be issued
  • Promise how fast the IRS will respond
  • Accept a notarized copy in place of an original or an issuing-agency certified copy
  • Authenticate every kind of document, see the required documents
  • Give tax or legal advice about whether you qualify

How it works

Every step is tracked in your account.

1

Tell us your situation

A short guided questionnaire points you to the right Form W-7 reason and lists the documents you will need.

2

Add applicant details and documents

Enter each applicant's information and upload clear photos or scans of your documents. This lets us review early.

3

Pay the service fee

The exact fee is shown before you pay. The IRS charges nothing for an ITIN.

4

Live interview with our CAA

We interview every applicant and inspect your originals. Video is allowed, but we must hold the originals during the interview.

5

We prepare and mail your application

Form W-7, the Certificate of Accuracy, and your return or exception documents go to the IRS by mail.

6

Track the result

We log IRS notices and follow up. Your ITIN arrives from the IRS on an IRS notice.

Important: original documents and notarized copiesThe IRS accepts original documents or copies certified by the agency that issued them. A notarized copy is not a substitute, and BKS Notary cannot make a copy acceptable to the IRS. In our interview we must physically hold your originals. Uploading a photo here helps us review early but does not replace the originals.
How long does the IRS take? The IRS says to allow about 7 weeks, and 9 to 11 weeks from mid-January through the end of April or when applying from overseas. These are IRS estimates, not promises from us.
